Presentation by Amelia Painter, Chair of Supervisor Katrina Foley's Monarch Committee and Heidi Bressler, Committee Educator
The Monarch Butterfly population is dwindling at an alarming rate. Habitat loss, climate change, pesticide use, and the decline of their essential host plant, milkweed, are pushing these iconic insects to the brink of extinction. Monarch butterflies play a vital role in pollination, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem functioning. Protecting and preserving these iconic insects is not only essential for the health of ecosystems but also for ensuring food security, economic prosperity, and cultural enrichment for future generations.
The speakers called upon each and every one of our members to join in and begin planting milkweed in our gardens and green spaces, creating havens for Monarchs to thrive.
Let us support organizations and initiatives dedicated to Monarch conservation efforts. Let us raise awareness and inspire others to take action, for the Monarchs, and for our future generations. (Pictured right is Heidi Bressler talking about steps often taken to save Monarchs. )
Supervisor Katrina Foley formed the Monarch Committee in an effort to help pollinators in all the cities she represents in Orange County's District 5. The committee will be giving out free milkweed seeds this spring and summer and our club house has been selected to have a Butterfly Garden installed, with the help of the committee. Watch for the ribbon cutting ceremony in the future, as the public will be invited to attend.
